In June, I visited City University Hong Kong, Department of Applied Social Sciences. I was very impressed with the ways in which they relate sociological theory to real world setting and problems. Their students really understand the applied nature of social science.

I came back with some exciting ideas of things we can do with our students, such as visits to places where sociological ideas have some relevance (a law courts, a refugee centre, a children’s charity), fascinating ways ideas can be disseminated to a wider audience (photographic displays, videos, a press report), and ideas for teaching (such as peer assessment of a presentation). Thank you to all the staff there who received me with such kindness.

The photo here is from the museum. The little hat box things are each made by someone as a way to express their ideas – I thought it would be great to use it for migration.
